More about me and my journey to becoming raw.

Hello,

If you are like me you may have read a few testimonies about the benefits of a raw food lifestyle and/or heard a number of people rave about raw food but hadn't felt too interested in finding out what they were raving about. When I first heard about raw food eating many of these people seemed to make it out to be a religion and I wasn't interested in that. I am a very devout believer in G-d, and follow the Torah and Yeshua and I didn't really want anything to do with a religious movement based on food. My faith is in G-d alone who provides us with food to live and be healthy. My faith is not in food. Its sad that a small minority of people can make something seem like religious fanaticism and scare people away with their extremism. When I first heard about a raw food diet, these were the type of people I heard from, and privately I thought to myself that all people eating that way must be absolutely crazy and had to be nuts because after all, where in the world did they get their protein. How wrong I was! Not every raw foodist takes their lifestyle to a religious level, but most view it as a healthy and energizing way of living their life, while staying free of common diseases that plague people on the SAD (Standard American Diet).
Eventually I stumbled across a website describing how to open a Young Thai Coconut. The website belonged to none other than Jenna Norwood who had done a documentary about how the raw food diet transformed her life when she tried it for 30 days at a raw food detox center (The documentary is called SuperCharge Me). While on her website I watched a trailer for SuperCharge Me and I was intrigued.
Following that stumble, I challenged myself to a 30 day raw food diet without knowing very much about it, except what I had researched rather hurriedly. It just so happened that my personal challenge coincided with the last month of a Body Challenge put on by my local gym which I was participating in. It was my second year participating in the Body Challenge but I wasn't making much headway. I had heard of the wonderful weight loss associated with eating raw, as well as the energy obtained combined with glowing and radiant skin, and I decided that for the last 30 days of the Body Challenge I would eat mostly raw. What happened was remarkable. I dropped thirteen pounds and after getting my body fat analyzed I as shocked to discover that I had only lost one pound of lean muscle the entire ten weeks of the Challenge. The year before I had been eating at least 110 to 120 grams of animal protein a day and had lost four pounds of lean muscle over a eight week period. In addition within three to four days of eating raw I was running three miles without feeling tired. The week before beginning my raw food challenge I had been plodding through my workouts and trying hard to run for ten minutes without having to stop from fatigue. My skin glowed, my hair shined and was fuller than ever and even though I did consume some cheese and matzoh crackers occasionally my diet had consisted of fruits, veggies, and raw nuts (to my knowledge) for an entire thirty days! Amazing.

I should have been sold. However, within a short time of ending both challenges, old habits began creeping back and soon I was eating sugary cakes, cookies, fatty foods, and even GASP! fast food occasionally. Slowly but surely I began to put back on the weight I had lost and with an occupation change and my husband unable to work due to a broken bicep tendon I sought comfort in food. Yes, I am admitting emotional binging. However, with all the stress and binging on sweets and junk food my health was plummeting and my hormones began to get out of control. One day I would be happy, the next day I would be depressed, and the following day an angry mood. Sadly, I also stopped praying as much as I used to because I have a tendency to shut myself off to all loved ones (including G-d) when I am an emotional mess but this only makes things even worse.

Finally I got tired of it all and decided I had to stop and take control of my health again. I had to get the shalom of YHVH back in my life and I had to get my hormones under control. My relationship with YHVH was suffering, along with my health.

I would like to say that I immediately started eating raw again, but I found excuses to return to eating that clean and so tried a diet that was higher in protein, lower in carbs, not so many veggies, and fat free or low fat. Within three weeks the skin on my arms and legs felt like sandpaper and flakes of white were visible on my skin. I still felt miserable and was so tired during the middle of the day that I found myself drinking four to eight cups of coffee a day. Exercise was the last thing I thought about. All I wanted to do was sleep.

After about a month of this I decided that I was going to return to eating raw, and I am so thankful that I did. In less than a week the skin on my arms and legs was back to normal. I got rid of any residual dead skin with the aid of a dry skin brush, and my energy was slowly but surely returning.

Along with my returning health, stabilizing hormones (and happier husband) prayer life like I used to have, and my relationship with YHVH returning to the closeness I love my energy has lately been shooting through the roof. Although some days I still find that I am tired in the middle of the afternoon lately I have had more energy than I know what to do with. For all of this I am extremely grateful, especially for the returning fire for YHVH and I praise G-d for it.

Now, a month later I am embarking on a seven day raw food detox through The Raw Divas in which I will not eat any fats of any kind. I started the detox tonight and for the first twenty four hours I will only consume water to prep my body for the next six days.

If you have heard so many great things about the Raw Food diet and would like to start eating this way but not sure how to start I would like to just encourage you to just go ahead and give it a try. If you are the cautious type and would like to incorporate a few raw foods a day there is a wonderful site called Hallelujah Acres that will not only provide you with information but will also give you great recipes in case you have no idea what you might prepare in the kitchen. They have put together a diet called the Hallelujah Diet which combines cooked foods with raw foods. Its worth the try especially if your health isn't where you would like it to be.

Not everyone can afford to enroll into a raw food detox center or take the time away from their busy lives for a 30 day vacation (even though it sure would be nice), but everyone can afford to take some time where they are at now to make a change for the better.

If you decide to take this journey may you be abundantly blessed!

Getting Ready For A Detox

Since beginning my transition to a Raw lifestyle of vibrant foods that are full of color, nutrition, and health I decided to partake in a seven day detox. Actually this decision came almost five days ago when I was perusing several blogs on Raw eating. I stumbled upon The Raw Divas blog (they also have a website called The Raw Divas.com) and saw that they offer a 7 Day Diva Detox at totally no charge.

I'm not so hot on the title 'diva' since that word has pagan origins and referred to the lowest deities in mythology. Also it was used for the female opera singers. What is the connection there? In American culture it refers to a beautiful woman. Anyway, I have a few misgivings about the title because of the origin of the word.

Back to the 7 day detox...
Excited I clicked on the link that said "Click here to get started..." and so I made the decision to do a seven day detox. But, I wanted someone to do the detox with. I immediately thought of one of my sisters and my mother who live North of me by a number of miles, and called them up. After some talking I was reminded that my sister was breastfeeding and that she could not do a detox. To do a detox while breastfeeding would put the baby at risk since toxins are excreted through human milk when detoxing. So she was out, just like that. My mother was in though, and for the last four days we have been touching base morning and evening, planning what foods we fruits and veggies we will be eating during the detox and how we will stay motivated and make it through the seven days. The detox starts tomorrow evening. We will have a final meal around 6pm and then survive on water until the following day when we will have our break the fast meal at around 6pm.

I'm super excited to do this detox for a number of reasons.

1. To get healthy for a future pregnancy, by getting rid of some toxins from the foods I have eaten over the last year and longer than that. I hope and pray that G-d blesses me with a child.

2. I have been going through some cravings for food. I know that most of these cravings are emotional, or habitual. There is nothing like a good seven day or longer detox to get these issues under control! In regards to habits. It is getting easier and easier to eat Raw throughout the day, but I still suffer set backs when I am headed home. One of my habits was to stop at the Whole Foods on the way home and grab a snack, like a Rice Dream Ice Cream or Sweet Chai Tea (kind of like a latte but tea). Then when I got home I would have a meal if I was still hungry. Then I cook my husband's dinner. By the time he gets home to eat, I normally sit with him, and I end up having some of what he's having just to share a meal with him once a day.

We don't eat meals together except on Shabbat because our schedules tend to be so different.
I get up and cook his breakfast, make our green juice, prepare his lunch for later, and my food for the day at work. I leave at 8am in the morning and he eats after I leave. I drink my juice on the way to work, and eat the rest of my food throughout the day while at work. My husband and I both get home at different times. Normally I am home between 5pm and 6pm and he is home after 7:30 or later and even though I have the food sitting in the oven he might not eat until 9pm. So, I really need to change my habits. Eating so late is not good for me, and part of this detox requires that my last meal be at 6pm every evening.

Another habit? Whenever I am bored I go to the kitchen and peruse the cabinets. If I find something interesting I will eat it. Not good.
I used to have a better handle on my habits and emotional eating but over the past year I have let that self control slide. As a believer a fruit of the Ru'ach (Holy Spirit) is self-control, so I have it. I just have to use it.

Doing a detox is the perfect way to get back on track.

Another detox that I would like to attempt is a
Six Week Detox that The Raw Divas offer. It is put together by Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo who, along with being a Chiropractor, a nutrition expert that resides as a diplomat of the American Clinical Nutrition Board, and a nutritionist, is a mother! How great is that?

So how am I preparing?

Well, I have limited the amounts of cooked and salty foods I eat. I have researched which plants aid most in detoxing.
Turns out apples, parsley, artichoke, asparagus, ginger, garlic, dandelion, and cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage all aid in detoxing. In addition fennel, lemon, kale, and other leafy veggies all help the body get rid of toxins naturally.

As I wrote above, my mother and I have been talking constantly. She is sounding more and more excited herself and I am enjoying doing this with her.

I miss my mother. Its so nice to be able to do something together.

Raw Day Almost All Day!

This morning I made a decision to eat raw throughout the entire day.
It is currently 7:55pm, and except for a few minor slips I have done quite well, so far.

Today for breakfast I had Sarma's Cilantro Shake (I have one of these almost every morning!!!)

Upon arriving to work I thought I was going to have a wonderful morning with the boys. And for the most part I did, but it was extremely challenging.
I have used the word NO! today more times than I can count. At least 100.
Getting the boys dressed today before their breakfast was almost difficult. They were not cooperating in the least and both wanted to do something other than put clothes on. That something other was play or touch the radio which they are not supposed to touch! They are really quite funny. Before touching or attempting to touch the radio they will look at me with a very sneaky look and a grin that says, ha ha - bet you won't do anything. I honestly don't want to reprimand them but do it because I recognize their lack of obedience is a challenge to my authority.

After about ten minutes I finally managed to get the boys dressed but the oldest twin was still without socks when I put them in their high chairs for breakfast.

After a very messy breakfast (the boys like to try and feed themselves) the boys tested me to the limits by taking turns running over to the stove (another thing they are NOT supposed to touch) only to have me chase them away. I was trying to wash dishes and clean up the breakfast mess at this point and finally I picked them up and put them into their pen to keep them away from the stove. The boys are fairly tall now and it wouldn't be hard for them to turn a burner on (they have turned one on at least once before) and reach up to the front burner and burn their little hands. They are also extremely smart - as evidenced by their teaming up to test me with the stove.

We went on a walk after Breakfast and made our way to a Farmer's Market in downtown Portland around PSU. Sorry to not be more exact but I don't remember the street names.
It was completely dreadful when we went out as it was raining yet again! Will we ever get a break from all this rain. Actually I looked at the weather and we are supposed to have a better day tomorrow. That would be so nice.

The market was wonderful, and they had beautiful fruits, vegetables, herbs, plants, honey, baked goods and goat's cheese! Mnnnnn.... I bought a Mt Hood Strawberry plant that has two red strawberries on it and now I have to figure out where I am to plant it. Next I bought some carrots with tops still intact, a vine ripened beefsteak tomato that smells like a tomato! and strawberries. I also bought some peacock kale which is quite different, and some golden swiss chard. I've never seen peacock kale before and absolutely didn't know that this variety of kale existed. Next I bought some goat's cheese called Chevantal from Deer Creek Farms in Woodland, Washington, and some chipotle pesto flavored chevre cheese. Absolutely delicious! Lastly, I stopped and bought some beautiful bright red strawberries. And they were sooo much better than what I buy in the stores. It had been a while since I had eaten vine ripened strawberries and I had forgotten they were so good. I have decided to like strawberries again. Normally strawberries are not a berry that I consider buying very often, just because they don't taste that great to me. They are good, but not great.

Here's a picture of peacock kale

The boys and I headed back to the house for lunch. They had lentils, cottage cheese, tomatoes from my pico de gallo, and broccoli and mushrooms from my salad. Oh yes, and the chevre cheese. They absolutely loved the cheese! They don't mind a little spice, and aren't picky eaters, as evidenced by the fact that they want to eat what I have brought for my lunch in addition to their own.

After lunch the boys had a wonderfully long nap and woke up in a much better mood. Once they had eaten their afternoon snack we took the elevator to the basement, and then I had them climb the stairs to the top floor (seven flights!) just to make sure they used up some more energy. The youngest was so cute. After each flight of stairs he would point upwards at the next flight of stairs in front of him and make some noises and give me a questioning look. He was delighted each time I told him, "Yep, more stairs! Keep going! What a good boy!" He would make some adorable giggling noises and commence up the next flight.

After the fifth flight of stairs the oldest boy tired out somewhat, and would stop in the middle of the flight of stairs to rest for a few minutes. I would be standing behind him coaxing him to continue and eventually he would. Once we reached the top of the building he wanted to investigate what was behind the door (that led to the inside of the building) and so we did. After conducting a thorough investigation of both the inside and the outside roof (it is fenced in) we took the elevator back down to the floor their apartment is on. Whew. I then had to get them ready for yet another walk with their parents so they will have used up a lot of energy and should sleep great!

Before returning home I had to stop at Whole Foods to pick up some limes, a lemon and some mangos for my juicing tomorrow. In addition to Sarma's cilantro shake that I drink in the morning, I am now drinking a carrot, mango, banana and apple shake with maca as an afternoon snack. Its really good. I'll be sure to post the ingredients before I am done with this post. While there I picked up a Raw Vanilla Bar by Happy Day Raw Food. It was so good that I decided to make my own variation when I got home as a treat at the end of the day for doing good on my Raw Food Diet.

I finally returned home to see that the sink was full of dishes and that plumbing needed to be done. Fortunately my husband had gone to Home Depot and got home soon after I did to work on it. But, in the meantime I put together a salad using the peacock kale and swiss chard that I had bought. Another great salad.

Oh, and I tasted the Chevantal cheese that I had bought. Delicious! It was very rich. Definitely something that I want to eat sparingly and as a treat. I can't wait till we are able to get goats! It would be great to make our own cheese. Mnnnnn....

So did I manage to eat completely raw today. Like I posted at the beginning of the post, I had a few slips, but here is what I did eat today.

Breakfast: Sarma's Cilantro Shake
Lunch: Pico de Gallo (why do they call it that?), a Salad and a few bits of Chevre cheese (a minor slip).
Snack: Carrot Mango Banana Shake
Just because: Two melba toast crackers (another minor slip)
On the way home: A Raw Vanilla Bar (I posted my variation below)
Dinner: Kale and Golden Swiss Chard Salad with veggies
Dessert: Strawberries and my own raw vanilla bars (frozen in ice cube trays)

Carrot Mango Banana Shake

You will need...

1 apple
8 carrots
1 lemon
1 Champagne mango
1 Banana
1 Tablespoon Maca Powder
Optional: 1/2 inch piece ginger, 1 pinch cinnamon and nutmeg

Juice apple, carrots and lemon. Set aside.

Process the banana, mango, maca powder (ginger and cinnamon if using) until smooth and then add the apple, carrot and lemon juice.
Enjoy!

My Raw Vanilla Bars

You will need...

1 young coconut
1/2 cup shredded coconut
2 tablespoon raw honey
1 vanilla bean
2 tablespoon coconut oil

Open the young coconut and put the coconut liquid in a glass. Set aside.
Scoop out the coconut meat and place in the food processor along with the vanilla bean and honey. Process until vanilla bean is almost completely chopped up. Whatever large pieces remain of the vanilla bean take out of the mixture. There will be lovely black specks (seeds from the vanilla bean) scattered throughout your coconut mixture. Next melt the coconut oil gently without it getting too hot and pour into mixture inside of processor, along with shredded coconut. Process until thoroughly mixed. Finally, slowly add the coconut juice and process a little longer.

Pour into an ice cube tray, and freeze for about thirty minutes. Enjoy!
